iPhone’s Top Competitors in 2012
It goes without saying that Apple has taken the smartphone space by storm, literally. With their latest realize, the iPhone 4gs having sold 1 million units within one day of its release, they are sitting at the top of the food chain for 2011.
Hot on the heels of the successful iPhone 4 gs, Apple is slated to release the iPhone 5. Said to be the last project Steve Jobs was directly involved in all the way from concept through development to final prototype, it’s expected to cement iPhone’s dominance.
Key features expected on the iPhone5 include:
- 4 inch multi-touch touchscreen with Gesture support
- The iPhone5 will support the super-fast 4G protocol
- The powerful A5 processor
- iOS 5
- 8 Megapixel high resolution camera at the back and a front camera as well.
- iCloud support
Quoting the International Business Times, the iPhone 5 will feature a SIM-less design with several antennas allowing concurrent GSM and CDMA support!
However, previous dominant players, the likes of Motorola and Nokia are not ready to throw in the towel just yet.
So who are the top iPhone Competitors in 2012?
1. The Motorola Droid Bionic
The Motorola Droid Bionic is Motorola’s response to the threat posed by the iPhone5. It’s, as expected, based on the highly successful Android platform. Some of its features will completely redefine the smartphone as you know it. It features include:
- 4.3 inch qHD screen display
- dual-core processor
- 4G capabilities.
- Lapdock capability
Motorola claim that it will be the fastest smartphone of 2012 in terms of connectivity and processing power. It will also run the android app, Speaktoit which for sure will give Apple’s much vaunted mobile assistant ‘Siri’ a run for its money, with its avatar faces that converse with you.
As if that’s not enough, there are rumors of the Motorola Bullet and Motorola Jet with such features as 12 Megapixel Camera, 16 GB internal memory and the new Tegra 3 quad core CPU from NVIDIA coming as standard. Talk about Motorola bringing out their A game!
2. Microsoft -Nokia Windows 8 Mobile.
Microsoft have been struggling when it comes to the smartphone segment but with their recent partnership with Nokia, there are rumors of a Nokia smartphone running Microsoft’s Windows mobile 8.
So far, the two giants have been mum regarding the specifics but it would be foolish to dismiss them as one is trying to maintain a market leadership while the other is trying to establish a foothold in the lucrative smartphone market, expected to exceed $191 billion in 2012.
Check out the video below and see just how much of a competitor windows 8 will be to iOS 5 which Apple is debuting on the iPhone5.
3. Blackberry Storm 3 (Monaco)
Beleaguered Canadian firm, Research in Motion (RIM) with their flagship brand Blackberry is expected to also provide a challenge to the iPhone in 2012. Leaked reports indicate that RIM will launch their first 4G capable phone in the first quarter of 2012. Codenamed the Blackberry storm 3 Monaco.
Being fully touch screen, it’s apparently a direct response to the iPhone5. Just like the iPhone5, it features:
- 3.7 inch touch screen, featuring Sure Touch technology
- Blackberry 6.0.2
- 5 Megapixels Camera -against iPhone5′s 8 megapixels
- Magnetometer
But surprisingly unlike the iPhone5, they did not include a front camera. This might cost them considering the feature is becoming a smartphone standard.
Blackberry is also expected to introduce touch capability on their famous block form factor phones such as the Blackberry 9700 Bold. They really need to go out of their way with this one, considering that the Apple and Google assault on their market share is beginning to hurt their bottom line.
- Samsung Galaxy S II.
Undoubtedly the most formidable challenger for the iPhone5 in 2012 considering recent history will be the Samsung Galaxy S II. Basking in the glory of the highly successful Samsung Galaxy S I, Samsung expect the S II to be no different.
Here is what this phone has to offer:
- 1.2 Ghz dual core- Most powerful processor available in the market today
- 8 MP camera with LED flash
- 8.49mm. -It’s taunted as the thinnest smart phone in the world
- 4.3 inch Super Amoled Gorilla Glass Display
Samsung claim the gorilla screen makes the phone the bullet proof of phones. Check out a drop test comparing the iPhone5’s younger brother, the iPhone 4s to the Samsung Galaxy SII.
And they seem to have got it right, since Apple has sued them on several counts for alleged patent infringement.
That said it’s apparent that 2012 will be a defining year for the smartphone industry and quite exciting for the consumers who can only wait and see which smartphone comes out the better phone.
